During CeBIT in Hanover, the “universal design awards” and the “universal design consumer favorites” awards for user-friendly design were presented for the fourth time. Once again, one of the winners was the office chair range ON. It won over both the panel of experts and consumers and swept up both awards at once.
We definitely need a bigger display case for ON’s awards. Having already garnered a huge number of prizes, it has now won another one. The “Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design” and the “European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies” have given it one of the world’s most prestigious design prizes: the GOOD DESIGN Award. Founded in 1950 in Chicago by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann Jr., GOOD DESIGN is the world’s oldest award programme for product and graphic design.

We hope you’re not bored with hearing about it, but ON’s long string of awards shows no signs of stopping. After the most recent Australian International Design Award 2010, the Mix Interior Award 2010, the Best of Competition Award at Neocon 2010 and the German Design Award in silver, this year highly successfully completes its vast bundle of prizes with the FX International Interior Design Award. At the ceremony on 30 November in London, ON was voted the Product of the Year 2010.

“Responsible Furniture” was Wilkhahn’s theme at Orgatec 2010. In addition to the new models in the ON office chair range (design: wiege), guests were able to try out the new flexible table models created by Andreas Störiko and designer Stefan Diez’s multi-purpose chair – which was exceptional for its manufacturing method alone. Two prototypes of the equally attractive conference chair, designed by Jehs + Laub, showed what we have to look forward to in the second half of 2011.
German Design Award 2011
The multi-award-winning office chair range ON has now bowled over the judges for the German Design Award. Often called the ultimate prize due to its particularly high demands, it is the top official German design award. The judges’ official statement was as follows: “Sitting as a natural form of movement that allows the body the natural movement options of which it is capable. In the excellently designed office chair ON, based on this conceptual approach, Wilkhahn has come up with yet another health-promoting milestone and thanks to the freedom of movement when sitting opens up new dimensions of experience at the workplace”. They also praised the chair’s functionality: “Everything revolves (literally) around Trimension®, a synchronized, kinematic system offering three-dimensional support whose pivots are exactly coordinated with the positions and scope of movement of hip and knee. The quick adjustment is activated using just two buttons”.
In this year’s competition, 962 nominations were submitted in the product design category. Only five products received the German Design Award in gold and 20 in silver. ON won silver and was the only product from the office furnishings segment to win one of the coveted awards.

Once a year, the German trade magazine Das Büro conducts the “Office Professionals Test”. On this occasion, the editors issue an invitation to their editorial office in Berlin-Mitte, in order to carry out full-fledged testing of high-quality office chairs on site. The test results left no doubt: the winner was the ON from Wilkhahn.
Despite the heat wave with temperatures soaring to nearly 40 degrees, about 90 “experienced office workers” took the opportunity in June of this year to evaluate ten different swivel chairs. In its latest issue, Das Büro presents the results: the undisputed winner according to points was the ON. It impressed through its “modern, fresh design” and exceptional ergonomical features thanks to its three-dimensional mobility. “Most of the testers had great fun trying it out”, was another conclusion. This goes to show once again: the ON not only looks attractive, it also stands the test in the daily routine.

On the 22nd & 23rd of September, the Wilkhahn London team exhibited the award winning ON chair at office*, a brand new event that focuses on bringing Office Professionals, PAs, Office Managers and Executive Assistants together with potential new business partners and solutions providers. Held at Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London, over 6000 of the Uk’s key decision makers and buyers responsible for purchasing all products & services required for any office visited the show over the two days. And of course ON proved to be a very popular.
